In Game Of Thrones Season 1, The King, Robert Baratheon, has leadership of the lands of Westeros, a mythical country plagued by severe, decade-long shifts in weather. His rule is challenged by the exiled Prince Viserys Targaryen, who trades his own sister for the allegiance of the Dothraki, a savage nomadic tribe led by Khal Drogo. The series begins with Ned Stark being asked to be the Hand of the King. Ned and his wife Catelyn receive a letter from Catelyn's sister, Lysa that gives them reason to believe that rival House Lannister was the cause of the previous Hand's death. Ned must travel south to help the king and find out who killed the Hand of the King, John Arryn, while trying to protect his family from the Lannisters.
Meanwhile, the exiled Viserys Targaryen, son of the former king, believes he still has the rightful claim to the throne. He marries off his sister, Daenerys Targaryen, to the leader of a warrior tribe, Khal Drogo, in an attempt to get an army to conquer the throne. And beyond the wall, an ancient force, long believed dead, threatens the land.
