An Amazing Start in The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead Seasons 1-2 DVD is a show that I appreciate more than like. To defend Walking Dead, this is clearly Sheriff Rick's story and so things that happen tend to happen because of Rick.

 

When Rick can go out and get active again they go back to Rick's house where he decides his wife and kid must still be alive because the photos are missing. Morgan nods knowingly: "I was getting provisions together and the wife was packing pictures. Women. Pffft. Totally unprepared for the zombie apocalypse with their silly emotional attachments."

 

In The Walking Dead 1-2 dvd box set, Rick's terror at discovering a room full of zombies is palpable because it mounts in such a way that it gives you the illusion of a real-time happening while suggesting a poetic luster that neither Moore nor Adlard's pencils have yet to achieve. Darabont's desiccated world is staggeringly lush, shot by cinematographer David Tattersall with a wide-angle lens capable of an astounding depth of field, and populated by gut-churning makeup effects by Greg Nicotero. Darabont has fashioned a fully realized alternate reality and it's a thrilling thing to experience.

 

The real success of this episode goes to the performance of Andrew Lincoln and Lennie James. Lincoln perfectly pulls off Rick's horrified state of mind as he enters this world of the undead. He really puts you in that mindset of the despair and horror all around him. James does an equally great job of showing you how one man has been adapting to it. Though his best moment is without a doubt when he's trying to shoot his undead wife. You feel his pain as he tries so desperately to pull that trigger.

 

The wife being banged by the best friend (Jon Bernthal) looks familiar. Oh, wait, I recognize her now. She's the doctor from Prison Break (Sarah Wayne Callies). I want to find out exactly how long the Asian guy will last. I want to see if race no longer matters in the event of a zombie apocalypse. The Walkers don't differentiate between skin color, right?
